The Fluttertime Story
Fluttertime is a family owned and operated business out of Vancouver Washington U.S.A. We have been crafting butterfly frames and filling them with exotic butterflies since 2003. Fluttertime is the culmination of a lifetime of passion for butterflies and preservation of nature.
When Jack, our butterfly artist, was a kid he was fascinated with raising and preserving butterflies. He used to walk along the railroad tracks at his home in Springfield, MO. looking for cocoons or chrysalis to raise and nurture. The pupa was than strung-up and he waited for the metamorphosis to occur. When the butterflies or moths finally emerged as an adult, if he was lucky, they would mate and lay eggs. When it laid its eggs that later turned into caterpillars he would care for the caterpillars until they made cocoons or chrysalis of their own and hatched and then releases them into the wild.
Growing up I remember Dad raising and preserving butterflies in our house. He had strings of Monarch chrysalis above our window. I remember seeing the butterflies hatch then begin pumping fluid into their wings until they became full size. After their wings dried they began to fly around the room. What a sight! These butterflies laid eggs that turned into caterpillars; little eating machines. I couldn't believe how fast they could eat down leaves. At night in my bed, when the world was dark and quiet, I could actually hear them eating. It seemed they ate non-stop until they grew large enough to make their chrysalis. Another time we raised giant Atlas moths. These things were bigger than my hands. When they flew around the house they sounded like mini-helicopters from their wings pushing through the air. My Dad has turned his lifelong love of butterflies into Fluttertime.
In the beginning, Fluttertime was just a lifelong dream of my dads that had not yet been realized. After retirement, with prompting from my mom, he was thinking about a way to supplement his retirement and keep busy. He had always wanted to have a home business, but had never pursued it due to time restraints since he was working full time as a systems engineer. He had always had a love for nature and since he was a kid had been collecting and raising butterflies. Starting Fluttertime, as my mom named it, was the perfect blend of a home business coupled with a passion for nature. From this humble beginning we have grown Fluttertime into a thriving business and have expanded our product line to also include flying mobiles, butterfly jewelry, framed insects and glass butterfly domes.
Now, through Fluttertime, we can provide you with these beautiful and special creatures to decorate your home for years to come. Also through our butterfly farms around the world Fluttertime is playing a part in preserving the Rain Forest habitat and protecting the butterflies of the world.
